Sustainable steel

Sustainable development is aimed at improving the quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come.

There are thousands of different types of steels. They evolve to support housing, food supply, transport and energy delivery solutions. Steel meets challenges posed by climate change, poverty, population growth, water distribution and energy. Almost everything that we use is either made from, or manufactured with, steel. It is a uniquely versatile material.

As producers of steel, it is our responsibility to meet the demand for steel in a safe, sustainable way. This means valuing the inter-dependence of environmental, social and economic aspects in all decision-making.

Minimising steel’s environmental footprint requires massive and continuous investment. The recent financial crisis has made this difficult, but the industry draws on its heritage of technological development for process refinement and product innovation. worldsteel helps to spread best practice and coordinate research into new steel products and processes with strong growth potential.

We, the steel industry remain committed to taking action, individually and together, in addressing the sustainable development challenges that we face.
