Technology
- Modern steelmaking relies on advanced technologies. Steel companies all over the world are investing in state-of-the-art steelmaking systems and practices to improve their operations and yield.
A good example of this is the Finex ironmaking process, used by Korean member company POSCO. In preliminary tests, the Finex system showed strong potential to reduce emissions of environmentally-harmful materials. POSCO officially inaugurated its first commercial scale Finex plant at its Pohang steelworks in 2007. The new plant has a capacity of 1.5 million metric tons a year.
In May 2007, the world steel industry set out its new policy on climate change. The industry will promote the use of the most efficient technologies more widely, and search for new solutions to the level of CO2 emissions from steel production.
worldsteel plays an important role in benchmarking best practice, helping its members improve their businesses. Representatives from member companies meet regularly to exchange information on technological, manufacturing and operational performance. Some examples of key topics are: environmental management, maintenance at steel plants, and a healthy and accident-free workplace.
