Message from the Director General
It is impossible to imagine a modern sustainable society without also thinking about steel as the core element. Yet, the global steel industry faces three significant challenges in the near future. Growth is expected to slow down in all regions, there is increasing volatility in raw material markets and the steel industry will have to invest in technological solutions to become more sustainable and to limit its impact on the environment.

1.5 billion tonnes of steel produced in 2011
A new record has been set for global crude steel production. The 2011 figure is an increase of 6.8% compared to 2010. See also a list of the 40 largest steel-producing countries in the PDF download.

E-mail subscription service for monthly statistics
The order form for worldsteel's monthly statistics e-mail service is now available. The subscription is valid for one year from February (with January data) to January of the following year. The subscribers package has been extended and now includes information about the world steel capacity utilisation ratio.

steeluniversity Challenge regional winners to compete in Grand Final
The winners of the first round of the steelunversity Challege were announced in November. The winning teams in both categories (student and industry) will meet and compete in the Grand Final in Brussels on 8 February.
