Ian Christmas receives the Bessemer Gold Medal

Ian Christmas, former Director General of worldsteel, received the Bessemer Gold Medal from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) in London last week. The medal presentation was part of IOM3's annual Sir Henry Bessemer Lecture and Dinner event, which took place on 20 October.

The Bessemer Gold Medal is awarded for outstanding services to the steel industry. In giving the award to Ian Christmas, Jan Lewis, President of IOM3, said that he had been instrumental in promoting the economic importance, value and relevance of steel to the modern world.

Ian Christmas also delivered the Sir Henry Bessemer Lecture. In his address, he focused on the critical importance of a sustainable steel industry for the future.

Henry Bessemer was an inventor and engineer. He was responsible for the Bessemer steelmaking process.
