Social sustainability
The steel industry is committed to the goal of an injury-free and healthy workplace. All injuries and work-related illnesses can and must be prevented.
In 2008, worldsteel produced a Safety and Health Principles Guidance Book, now available in 10 languages, and a safety poster to help its members adopt and apply the principles.
Perhaps the most important work in safety and health is the collaborative effort to identify and share best practices in key risk areas, to help avoid or minimise serious events.
Also, as part of its social responsibility work, worldsteel provides resources for the education of employees and the public about steels and the production of steels. steeluniversity.org is a free and innovative e-learning site that develops knowledge and skills to higher levels.
Steel producers’ investment in local communities does not only consist of providing employment. They support infrastructure and various health-improving initiatives, and take an interest in the social implications of steel products in society.
